Located in a quaint coastal area north of Copenhagen, Denmark, sits a picturesque sommerhus (summer house in Danish). A private holiday home of five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a powder room, set over two floors and comprising a total of 182sq.m. The history of the house dates back to 1899, when it was constructed from black-painted timber with a red tiled roof. It has since had only a handful of owners.
We were commission in late 2019 , and the brief was to do a sympathetic restoration that looks and feels like a “luxurious upgrade of a traditional Danish beach hotel”. Our client emphasised that they wanted it to feel calming, both to complement the surrounding nature and for it to be a relaxing destination for them to visit on weekends and holidays.
The house had to undergo a full refurbishment, replacing most exterior finishes whilst retaining original decorative features. Internal floors and windows were also replaced like-for-like.
We instinctively chose a calm and muted colour palette to compliment the surrounding landscape. Abundant windows allow sunshine in and frame unobstructed sea views. The natural, weathered tones found outside formed the inspiration for inside. We worked with Danish joiners in order to create bespoke bunkbeds and the creation of our Walford Bed came to life through this project. Moreover, we chose to specify a deVOL shaker kitchen to enhance the country-style living and character. Vintage furniture and lighting was found locally in Denmark, as well as through various dealers around UK and London.
