Bespoke Interior Design
The interior scheme was tailored to evoke a sense of warmth and calm via a palette of rich, inviting hues and embracing natural textures. The overarching design had to display the duality of offering a grown up and considered interior, whilst also giving room for fun and activities for the family. Injecting bursts of colour into specific areas like the WCs and kids’ bedrooms adds a playful touch that reflects the family’s collective personalities.
Main bathrooms were designed with natural materials to reflect the surrounding nature and seascape, meanwhile the incorporation of iconic and pared back mid-modern furniture throughout creates an environment perfectly suited for a calm seaside lifestyle. Serving as our client’s retreat from bustling city life, this house has spaces and amenities which match their seaside pursuits, such as a spacious boot room with space to hang wet-suits, outdoor shower for aprés ocean dips, and a dedicated play room for the kids and their friends.
The main feature on the ground floor is the kitchen space, positioned in the heart of the building. We had to consider the contemporary architecture along with our client’s needs. It was with this in mind that we introduced a shaker style oak frame, but with a slim profile and dark stained to match joinery elsewhere in the house. Alluding to both traditional and modern tendencies, patinated steel inserts were added to create the kitchen’s signature bespoke design. Speaking to the locality of the house, a limestone island sits as a monolithic block, that while imposing in size, is subtle and soft in materiality.
In addition to the main living areas, the design included an inviting guest annexe. This was purposefully designed to offer visitors a private haven, comprising a cosy bedroom, en-suite bathroom, intimate living and dining area, and well equipped kitchenette – with ocean views.
The architectural vision was brought to life by a local Exeter-based architect, who’s emphasis was on enhancing the panoramic ocean views with expansive glazing. This was supported through our interior choices, where we designed glazing partitions and doors, which would not obstruct the views, yet still divide spaces and the main hallway. The frames where designed and powder coated an off white, to keep the airy and light sensation and flow between spaces. In addition bespoke doors and architraves were designed in oak, these added further architectural characteristics to rooms, accompanied with oak and natural stone flooring throughout.
